Hackers temporarily shut down Illinois Senate Democrats’ Web site
SPRINGFIELD – Unknown hackers shut down a state Web site for several hours Sunday and early Monday.
The Illinois Senate Democrats’ site, senate
dem.ilga.gov, appeared simply as a blank white screen with the words, “by 3n_byt3 @ indonesia hackers
“ in the center from Sunday evening until 8 a.m. Monday morning, when the site was repaired.
Toby Trimmer, communication director for the Illinois Senate Democrats, said there were a number of attempts to hack the site, but he did not know who was responsible.
Webmaster Ted Pruitt said hackers were able to exploit a weakness in the Windows operating system, and staffers were working on resolving the issue.
“We don’t have any indication of what the motive is behind it,” Pruitt said.
Pruitt thinks the incident was isolated and that no personal information was compromised because the site is maintained on a separate server from other state Web sites.
A spokeswoman for the state agency that oversees over 130 state Web sites was unaware of any similar incidents Monday.
Alka Nayyar, spokeswoman for Central Management Services, said in an e-mail: “We have not had any recent issues related to hacking on the sites we manage. Since attempts to hack our sites can occur every day, we utilize many IT security tools and have processes in place to help keep our sites from being affected by these attempts.”
